Ret. Col. Jill Morgenthaler to Speak on Leadership

On September 18, Retired Army Colonel Jill Morgenthaler will speak to the club about her new book, The Courage to Take Command: Leadership Lessons from a Military Trailblazer. Colonel Morgenthaler will pass along  leadership lessons drawn from her three decades of military service--from her first days in ROTC to combat in some of the world's most dangerous war zones. Ironically, the military taught her that leadership isn’t about "command and control." Rather, it requires a fine balance of reason and emotion, distance and familiarity, hard and soft power.

The Courage to Take Command provides the strategies and tactics you need to follow through with your leadership vision, inspire your team, and execute your mission―even when the odds may seem overwhelming.

Col. Morgenthaler was the first woman battalion commander in the 88th Regional Support Command; she was the first woman brigade commander in the 84th Division; and she was the first female Homeland Security Advisor for the State of Illinois. The Colonel handled disaster recovery during the San Francisco earthquake, worked as a peacekeeper in Bosnia, and sheltered Kosovar refugees. For her leadership performance in Iraq in 2004, she received the Bronze Star.  Plus, she was invited to give a TED talk on her book, a great honor.  Watch it at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuoQE3-BTMw
